At its year end briefing today in the financial capital, Intel shared its plans for 2014 and reflected upon the year 2013. As per the roadmap outlined for the business in 2014, Intel expects areas like Internet of Things (IoT), High Performance Computing (HPC), Big Data to be major growth drivers for the business with a continued focus on expanding the footprint on the National Digital Literacy Mission (NDLM).

On the Consumer side of the business, Intel had on display an exciting array of latest devices like 2-in-1s, convertibles and phablets with Intel® Inside to signal the beginning of the scintillating wave of computing in 2014.

2013 – A Year in Review
Reflecting upon the year gone by Srinivas Tadigadapa, Director – Enterprise Sales, Intel – South Asia said, “Year 2013 saw Intel take major strides in areas like IoT and HPC with their applications growing across sectors. With specific reference to HPC, India took center stage with the Top500 Supercomputers list recognizing 12 Supercomputers from India and elevating its position to become the 7th country among 27 countries to house the top supercomputers globally. Also the launch of Intel’s Hadoop version II marked Intel’s foray into strengthening its software ecosystem to complement its Hardware capabilities”.

On the National Digital Literacy Mission, he added, “Since its inception, NDLM has touched 1700 households and has seen major success in three states from the 10 states that NDLM is expected to roll out in. To add to this, Intel has trained over two million people in 2013 using its Intel Learn Easy Steps digital literacy curriculum and launched an Android based app of the same. Intel also launched a large nation-wide campaign to drive relevance and demand of personal computing devices covering ten states and reaching over 20 million households. Intel’s flagship program ‘My Discoveries’ reached out to over five million youth across the country in 2013.”

Providing an overview of the consumer business, Sachin Kelkar, Head – APAC Scale Software Program, Intel Software & Services Group said, “Year 2013 saw Intel launching a range of exciting & innovative products and delivering next generation processors that became the backbone for a new era of thinner, faster and more portable devices. Intel also worked closely with the industry and government to help connect people in India through technology and provide cost-effective solutions to address key issues such as education and training.”

2014 Predictions

Education Evolution
Intel predicts that within the next three to five years, India will see a huge increase in device ownership with one device for every student increasingly being the norm. The key challenge will be providing the students, particularly in regional areas with the right education, devices and services to engage them.

Internet of Things/Quark
The Intel Quark technology will help extend Intel’s reach to rapidly growing areas, from the Internet of Things to wearable computing in the future. With Intel Quark technologies, Intel is extending the flexibility and scalability of the x 86 ecosystems which encompasses more than 40 years of compute innovation and standards into new markets. This trend is being driven by increasingly connected devices, seamless connectivity from sensors to the datacentre, cloud economics for compute and data and the acceleration of big data analytics to extract value from data. The IoT offers businesses the opportunity to develop new services, enhance productivity and efficiency, improve real-time decision making, solve critical problems, and develop new consumer experiences.

HPC to gain more prominence
With ongoing technology innovations in the area of HPC, Intel expects India to have more supercomputers listed in Top500 in the year 2014. Additionally, increased collaboration with leading experts in CSIR, DST and Industry is expected to further propel the application of HPC in India with more scientists and researchers getting access to parallel computing clusters. As the leading HPC solutions provider in the market, Intel will continue engaging with researchers to increase the efficiency, scalability of their code.

Big Data paves the way for innovation
Intel believes that having 15 billion connected devices in the next few years is achievable. The biggest question is around where the data will go when these devices connect and the best way to make use of that information. This will prompt a whole industry to grow around predictive analysis and raw data. Big Data will help make companies smarter, more progressive and give them a business advantage. Governments will soon follow.

Consumers demand new levels of interaction

In 2014, consumers can choose from a range of devices including traditional laptops, 2-in-1s, tablets and portable all-in-ones (AIOs) with Intel Inside, across varying price points to fit every budget.
